Thursday – John Roberts Summer 5k Series, Race 4

6 July 2019 - By David Jobling

Can you believe it, it’s here already, it’s on Thursday – and it’s the final race in our very own John Roberts Summer 5k Series!

This final race will be in the usual handicap format and with an amazing 62 different members all having run in the series so far and setting down a time, we could have a record turnout for the series grand finale.

Competitors will be allocated a handicap start time based on a previous run on the course this year and set off at intervals with the handicap race winners being the first male and female runners to cross the finish line – the allocated handicaps should ideally level things off and reward those who make the most significant improvements on the day – and it could be a bunch finish if the handicap setters get the times right.

But in total there are four trophies for two very separate competitions to be decided on Thursday, the male and female handicap race winners and also the overall male and female series winners across 3 of the series races – based on overall performance across 3 of the races including elements of position, performance and improvement (thankfully Marc’s spreadsheet will figure this out for us!).

However you will need to have raced in at least one of the 3 previous 5k races this summer at Kelvedon to qualify for the handicap race, and overall 3 races (which could include Thursday) to qualify for the series trophies.

Phew, so now that’s all clear then I’ll move on swiftly:

Competing runners please register from 7.00pm at The Angel.

Registration will close at 7.30pm, bring a previous number or collect a new one when registering.

If you already have a number, please still register to get a start time and so we know you are there!

First competing runner will set off as soon as possible after 7.30pm (….ish).

If you have not raced at least 1 of the previous 3 races this summer, please do not take a number as this will cause issues with the scoring and results process. It will still be possible to run without a number but please speak to myself, Marc or our registration peeps first so we can give you a start time and make marshals aware.

Results and Awards for the 5k series and the handicap race will be announced and presented immediately after.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with the series so far especially our previous Race Director Bill who is away, as ever we need volunteers for registration, setup, marshalls, starters and finishers so if you are able to help out in any way then please do let me know – I’ll post a FB reminder later.

Please order food before 7.30pm, it’ll be served around 8.45/50pm after results and presentations, or please just stay for a drink instead to support our hosts, if you haven’t had an opportunity to do this already, who kindly accommodate WRC for this series and pretty much let us take over the front of the pub.

Watch our for more news and posts appearing before kick off time, looking forward to meeting up with everyone Thursday. DJ
