About Witham RC

About our club

Witham Running Club was formed in 1983 to support those who wish to train, race and run for fun on and off road. We are a friendly club with around 180 members. Our club colours are black and old gold.

We have a number of coaches, qualified to either Coaching in Running Fitness (CiRF) or Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF), who hold a weekly structured training session. Our ratio of ladies to men is about 45:55.

There are further details about the club elsewhere on this site, but the best way to find out about our club is to come along and give us a ‘no commitment’ try. If you do then the chances are that you will come back because not only do we support and encourage everyone, whether experienced or new to running but we are a very friendly and social club as well. Our club nights are suitable for most standards of runner with groups ranging from 6 minutes a mile to 12 minutes plus. We also try to hold ‘Introduction to Club Running’ courses once or twice a year to encourage newer runners.

Training with us

Details of our meeting locations can always be found on the home page of our website. We meet for a Social Run at 7:00pm on Tuesday evenings at either Maltings or Rickstones Academy (September – April) and for a Structured Training Session at 7:30pm on Thursday evenings at various locations in and around Witham.

During the summer months (April – September) our Tuesday Social Pub Runs start from various pubs in surrounding villages, and lots of our members stop afterwards for a meal or a drink.

On Sunday mornings at 9am you will often find a group running longer distances to suit individual needs from Morrisons in Witham. All abilities and distances are catered for from about 6 miles up and these runs are intended to be for slow distance training. Almost mandatory, however, is a hot drink and a cake afterwards in the Morrisons cafe!

Races

During the year our members enter numerous road and cross country races including the Essex Championship series.

We organise a coach each year for runners and friends participating in the London Marathon and have teams entering the 53-12 Cross Country league a series of 6 Sunday morning races from October to February.

In addition to the club championship we organise a summer 5K series of races, a May Day 10 Mile and the Boxing Day 5 mile race from the football club which regularly attracts 400 runners from all over Essex and further afield.

For the past few years, in November, we have been going to Benidorm to lap up the sun and enter the half and full marathons.

Our social events

Club BBQs, the annual awards dinner and dance and ‘days out’ are all part of our social calendar.

For further information you can either search elsewhere on this site or contact one of the clubs officers via the Contact Us link but the best thing is to come along one Tuesday night – you won’t be disappointed! (check the weekly ‘What’s on this Week’ posting)
