#LetsLiftTheCurfew – our runs next week
22 October 2025 - By Jodee Mayer
Let’s Lift the Curfew launched in 2023 and has evolved into a national movement with an annual campaign when the clocks go back – and an “unwanted curfew” of the dark hits.
Now in its third year, the campaign seeks to amplify women’s stories, promote allyship and encourage wider cultural awareness of the issues that prevent many from being active outdoors during the autumn and winter — from poor lighting to fear of harassment.
I originally joined the club because I was training for London and didn’t want to have to run on my own in the dark, so I can attest first hand to the safe space the club provides to people that want to get out in the darker months.
Kate Dale, Director of Marketing at Sport England and This Girl Can, said: “Every winter, many women are forced to adjust their routines, avoid certain routes or stop being active outdoors altogether – not because they want to, but because they don’t feel safe. It is a societal failure that women changing their behaviour is normalised, rather than changing the behaviour of those that make them feel unsafe. Let’s Lift the Curfew is about calling that out and demanding better.
“This year’s movement is powered by allies and communities everywhere who refuse to accept that women’s freedom should shrink when the sun goes down and the clocks go back. Together, we’re showing what real change looks like –one street, one run, one act of solidarity at a time.”
So WRC are getting behind #LetsLiftTheCurfew and below are the ways This Girl Runs are asking our members can take part.
ACTIVITIES
In addition to our Halloween themed run on Tuesday (see Jenny’s post – fancy dress encouraged) we will be supporting and promoting #LetsLiftTheCurfew on our Tuesday and Thursday runs next week – by just being our usual friendly, welcoming, and hi-viz and lights wearing selves!
I’m sure there’ll be lots of photos of awesome costumes anyway, but if you’re happy to, take some photos of your group whilst out and share them – someone remind me on Thursday to take a group photo please!!
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Are there women in your wider networks who you could invite to join us at club next week to run after the curfew or who you could invite out for a run on another day?
USING STRAVA
ThisGirlRuns are asking everyone to label their activities on Strava as ‘Let’s Lift The Curfew’.
SOCIAL MEDIA
You can then share your Strava activity to your social media with the hashtag #LetsLiftTheCurfew and tag This Girl Can, explaining that these activities are to draw attention to the safety concerns preventing women getting active during darker months.
If you’re sharing it to your Instagram Story, you can search for the ‘Let’s Lift The Curfew’ sticker in-app and add that too.
Tag in This Girl Can where appropriate as they would love to see your posts and re-share:
- Facebook – @ThisGirlCanUK
- Instagram – @ThisGirlCanUK
and don’t forget to @withamrunningclub and tell everyone why you’re supporting the campaign – to show that running should not have a curfew.
