Club Championship Information
28 January 2022 - By James Blackshaw
Now that our club championship competition is back in full swing (some of you have already picked up points at the XC Champs), thought I’d share some more info on how to pick up points.
The club champs tables are here, so feel free to have a look and make sure you are included on the list somewhere. If you are a Witham Running Club member you are already entered into this competition by default, so you should be on the list.
The main way to pick up BIG points is take part in some of the selected races listed here. Your time in those races will be pitched against the fastest person on the planet of the same age as you, and you will get a score. So if your time is 67% as quick as the world record for that distance by someone of the same age, then you will get 670 points. Your fastest time for each distance will be added up to make up your performance score, so you don’t have to run in every race listed (far from it), but to get near the top of the leader board you should probably run in at least one race at each of the 5 distances. Club rules state you have to be signed up to the race under Witham Running Club and run in club colours. Like I say, this is where the big points come from. And because it’s age graded, literally anyone could win.
The next way to pick up points is via the commitment/volunteering element. This involves either racing in a particular race or volunteering at something, and the points are set for each element. Here is a list of the things you can pick points up for:
- Running in the Essex 20 (50 points)
- Running in the Halstead Marathon (50 points)
- Taking part in the Road Relays (100 points)
- Volunteering at any of club 5k races (25 points)
- Running at the Ekiden Relays or the Essex Way Relays (100 points)
- Running in XC Champs or the XC Relays (100 points)
- Running in any of NESS XC Fixtures (100 points)
- Marshalling at the MD10, BD5, Essex Way Relays, Halstead Marathon or our XC fixture (if we hold one) (100 points)
So after this weekend we should have quite a few people picking up 100 points at the Harwich XC fixture.
Also, we do allow everyone one wildcard race, which means that you can submit a time from a race not in the selected races, but you are only allowed to do this for one distance. For instance, I’m running in the Great Bentley half marathon, but that isn’t on the selected races list, so I’ll probably use that as my wildcard.
Good luck everyone! Any questions please let me know.

Hi James
I think I should have 100 points for running Ness XC Race 3?
Thanks
Kerry
Hi Kerry, only races from 2022 count, so tomorrow’s XC at Harwich will be the first NESS XC to count towards the champs.
Note to self – read post more thoroughly. . Thanks James.
Hi James are there any points to be collected from just entering a witham club champ race.
Mark
Hi Mark, yes, 25 points if it’s a club champs race, and an extra 25 if it’s an Essex Champs.
