Speed Development – Thursday 2nd Jan and beyond…
31 December 2019 - By Scott Darney
Athletes of WRC,
This Thursday we start 2020 Speed Development with a 2.5k Time Trial and we would encourage as many of you to attend, especially those who plan to run a marathon in Spring 2020.

The focus of the Speed Development sessions for the next few months will be Marathon training. The website will be updated in the new year with more details but those that aren’t doing a marathon shouldn’t be discouraged as these sessions can compliment training for any distance from 5k upwards and will still be suitable and beneficial for all.
There are a number of reasons why a Time Trial is beneficial during training and in particular during marathon training.
Firstly: it’s a marker. We will do another 2.5k TT in the coming months and it’s a good way of gauging your improvement.
Secondly: racing is hard! Especially marathons. During a time trial you have an opportunity to put yourself under the same physical and mental demands of a race and to challenge yourself to keep going when your body is telling you to slow down (or stop!). A short 2.5k time trial should have little or no impact on your training plan as most can recover quite quickly from an effort as short as this.
After the time trial there will be some strides so stick around before you disappear!
On the subject of training plans, please note that there is a WRC marathon training plan coming in the new year which will provide guidance and structure for those that do not currently have a plan.
Happy New Year everyone!
Scott
