JR 5k – Handicap – 16 July 2026 – volunteer sign up and runner instructions
11 July 2026 - By Jodee Mayer
The grand finale of the 2026 John Roberts 5k Series is nearly upon us! DJ has collected the trophies, the start times have been calculated, and the Angel is booked for the race on Thursday 16 July 2026!
If you have participated in 2 (run at least 1 and volunteered at at least 1) of the first 3 JR 5k races, then you are entered into the handicap race and your name will appear in the list further below. If you haven’t qualified for the handicap, or if you can’t run, perhaps you would consider joining the hi viz army instead?
Race HQ is at The Angel in Kelvedon, CO5 9AN. There is limited parking available, please car share where possible. You can also courteously park on the surrounding roads where available.
Please pre-order any food before the race starts. As always, it would be great if we could stay and support the pub, at least for a drink afterwards (non-/alcoholic).
Volunteer please!
As always, we couldn’t run these events without your support, so with that in mind we’re here again to call for volunteers.
Timings for the various roles are as follows:
- Course Setup volunteers (3 people) – needed from 18:00 for course setup at The Angel
- Registration and Timekeeping (2 people) – needed from 18:45 for registration at The Angel
- Course Marshals (12 people) – need to be out on the course before 19:30
Course set up volunteers can also run in the race 🙂
If you’d like to help, please fill in the form below by 12 noon on Wednesday 15 July.
Final instructions for volunteers will follow in due course, but timings are above.
As always, your support is very gratefully received!
Runners
Registration for runners is between 18:45 and 19:15, please report to Race HQ! The start of the race is about half a mile up the road, and this will allow time for a jog or walk to the start line.
For those of you that may need a reminder, the handicap works by taking the times recorded during the qualifying races, running them through a fancy spreadsheet, and throwing out some start times for all the runners with the plan (/hope) that all of the black and gold comes flying into The Angel’s car park at the same time! Therefore, the winner of the handicap will be the the person who puts the most effort in on race day and crosses the line first.
The start order has been set; the first runner will set off at 7.30pm with the runners then following in order as below – don’t worry, you don’t have to remember this as your timing team will line you up like you’re in the school playground at about 7.25pm and set you off in order on the day, but we are providing this information in advance for anyone that may want to take it into account for a warm up etc.
If your name appears in the list below and you know in advance that you will not be running, please can you let me know as the more prep I can do on the spreadsheet in advance the easier it is on the night!

The winner of the handicap is the first person across the line.
The winner of the series is calculated using the fancy spreadsheet.
Sshould all be fine, we will announce all of the winners after the race.
Please bring your race number with you from your last race in the series. If you have lost, washed, or forgotten it, don’t worry I’m sure we can find one for you (it won’t be hard, I have 100s). For the handicap, if you have a race vest please do wear it.
Remember that this is a road race and there will be traffic so please remain alert and listen to the marshals. We discourage headphones, but will allow bone conducting headphones only.
Any questions, as always reach out and we will do our best to answer them.
