Essex Way Relay 2025 – report
7 September 2025 - By Jodee Mayer
Well, despite my predictions of “the first wet Essex Way Relay” (well, in my time being involved), it was another glorious (i.e., far too warm) day for the Essex Way Relay.
Thanks to everyone that responded to my calls/pleas for runners, we got 2 teams out this year running across Essex from Epping to Harwich.
Pre-race
As Andrew has already noted, our thanks to Andrew Read, DJ, Ian Lucas, and Patrick who did recces and “vegetation management” of the leg we manage, leg 5, the route taking runners from Cressing to Great Tey.
Andrew and Angela also went out to do a re-write of the instructions which I am sure was appreciated by all of the runners of our leg.
This is a crucial part of us being able to manage Leg 5, and our gratitude to everyone for giving up their time.
Leg 5
Andrew Read was our leg manager this year, I am sure ably assisted by Angela. As one of the marshals out on the course today, my thanks for the w3w, photos, and instructions sent to me which made my job very very easy.
As always, these things take a village and we had a number of volunteers helping out on the day, including our leg 5 runners Rachel and Lisa who stepped in at the last minute to help set up at the finish:
Set up: Andrew, Angela, Lisa, Rachel Sharp, Monty
Marshals: Wally and Jodee
Ending: Andrew Read, Angela Read, Karen Flowers and Martyn Byford
As above, we couldn’t manage a leg without the volunteers, and a huge thanks to you all.
Results
Having not heard from anyone by 9am, I correctly assumed I wouldn’t be needed to run a leg at the last minute and headed out on my long run – thank you to you all for making your Captain’s job such a breeze.
It is also great to have photos of all of the runners this year!

The theme of the finish line photos is beverages – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic – which were very well deserved!
Out of 62 entered teams, Witham RC Team A – 6 came 40th overall, Witham RC Team B – 7 came 34th.
Well done to all our runners from the day, here is the individual breakdown of each runner and position:
