29-Sep-24 Llandudno Olympic Distance Triathlon
4 October 2024 - By Anita Grainger
Anita was in Wales last weekend competing in the Llandudno Olympic Distance Triathlon, a European Championships Qualifying. Having narrowly missed out on qualifying for sprint distance over the season after having whooping cough and not being on form at Dambuster olympic distance qualifier in June Anita decided to have one final try.
The race consisted of a sea swim, which was a chilly 14.5 degrees, followed by 4 laps up round the Orme which was exciting and scary. It got windier on each lap and the bike had a few twitchy moments. Had to negotiate a goat descending the 3rd lap
luckily it jumped back up onto the bank and didn’t jump back. The run was along the seafront promenade.
Not sure what happened on the swim as Anita was about 10 mins slower than usual. The bike was a case of survival especially into head on and side winds and the run was a case of hanging on which Anita did with a decent run time, finally getting some speed back there. There were a number of people who pulled out after the swim and part way round the bike. It was tempting , however, Anita is not one to quit and kept going. This may have paid off as currently waiting to find out whether successful with qualification.
It was a great event but shattered after racing in Vichy the previous weekend , doing swim serpentine the week before and driving to Wales and back over the weekend. One more race to go at the worlds in Torremolinos in 2 weeks then time for a well earned rest. Times and splits below:
Swim 37:13
T1 02:52
Bike 1:45:33
T2 01:54
Run 56:38
Total 3:24:10
