Road Safety Reminder
19 January 2026 - By Karen Flowers
Hi everyone
As you are aware, making sure that you are safe on the road whilst running is really important to us.
One of our committee members was approached over the weekend with regards to some concerns that they had observed:
- Runners running on the wrong side of the road
- Some runners not wearing reflective clothing
It is with this in mind that we thought it would be a good idea just to remind you of a few basic rules of the road, to ensure you all get home safely.
- Just because you can see a driver does not mean that they can see you – assume they cant
- At night and in poor light conditions wear bright or reflective clothing and or head/ chest torches
- Run against the traffic (unless on blind bends)
- When running in a group a designated runner should clearly communicate with the group, on what side of the road to run and when there is a need to cross safely when approaching a blind bend
- At sharp bends always run on the wide part of the bend
- Look out for cyclists
- At a stop sign or light, wait for the driver to wave you through – then acknowledge with a return wave
- Allow at least 3 feet (1 metre) between you and a passing vehicle
- Be prepared to move to the shoulder or side of road
- On busy roads, groups should run in single file to allow cars to pass safely
- Make sure to look out for cars reversing out of driveways as they may not always see you
- At intersections always wait and look for vehicles coming from multiple directions and lanes before attempting to cross
- If you run with headphones, make sure you still hear what is going on around you
- Early morning runs – watch out for early morning drivers who may be driving without safely clearing ice or dew from their windscreens.
Thanks
Karen
