Triathlon Result – Colchester Sprint Triathlon

25 September 2017 - By Scott Darney

Whilst everyone else seemed to be at Pleshey, I was donning my black and gold Tri-suit at the Colchester Sprint Triathlon as my final triathlon of the year and to provide some company for a friend from SwimFit who was entering his first triathlon event.

This was the first Colchester Sprint Triathlon event organised by Island Races and consisted of a 300m pool swim at the Corporal Budd VC Gymnasium, a 20km cycle round the Abberton Reservoir and a 5km run from the transition area to the running track at the Abbey Fields.

Swim was rather uneventful as it usually is in the pool and was relatively pleased with a 300m effort of 5mins 40secs. The bike was a little windy as it normally is around the reservoir and lack of cycling miles really showed with a sluggish time but distance came in at more like 23.5km rather than the 20km advertised. The 5 compulsory foot downs didn’t help but I can’t blame them for a slightly disappointing bike time of 47:50. The run also came in a bit longer than planed at about 5.5km / 3.5m but I’ll take that all day long as my running at the moment is easily my strongest discipline, and it showed with the 2nd quickest run time on the day.

Overall I ended up coming 10th out of 56 starters. My friend Sam smashed the swim but got a puncture on the bike. Luckily one of the kind marshalls lent him a bike to finish the cycle leg on so he did manage to finish the bike leg and then the run leg. I’ve also recommended a club for him to join if he is interested in improving his run times!

My splits as follows:
Swim 05:40
T1 00:51
Bike 47:50
T2 00:40
Run 21:29
