The Old Crown, Messing Trail Route

1 From the memorial and with the church behind you head straight ahead on the road out of Messing towards Kelvedon. At the T-junction turn right.
Past the farm buildings head up the left-hand grass verge to a finger pointer and through a kissing gate and then a wooden gate
Follow the path in between wooden fences to a set of stairs and a wooden bridge.
Continue straight ahead and through a metal gate.
Follow the path straight ahead through the field and into the woods.
Stay on the path straight ahead past the pheasant cage on the left.
Follow the path straight ahead through the field past the lone tree and through a gap in the hedge
2 1.1 m At the marker post follow the path diagonally to the left across the field and through the gap in the hedge
Turn right down the steep hill to the road (please take care with footing)
At the road TAKE CARE AS IT CAN BE VERY BUSY, turn right and stay on the grass verge until the finger post.
Cross the road when safe, and head through the large metal gates for Inworth Hall
Go through the small metal gate to the left hand of the drive and stay on the path straight ahead running parallel with the drive
Go through the gap between hedge and wall and at the marker post on the right turn right into the farm and follow the trail on the left out of the farmAt the junction (next to the large pylon) turn right and continue along the wide trail
3 2.0m At the marker post on the right at the end of the hedge line turn right down the trail and cross the bridge over the A12
As the trail bends left take the diagonal path across the field to the right
Follow this trail past a gate and to the end of World’s End Lane opposite the Sun Inn
Turn right up Feering Hill until you get to a finger post and a kissing gate on the right-hand side (if you get to the zebra crossing you’ve gone too far)
4 3.1m Follow the enclosed path as it turns left and right
When the path opens into a field follow the path diagonally across towards the hedges
Follow the path as it turns left through a gap in the hedge through to the next field
If the farmer hasn’t ploughed follow the diagonal path across the field – if it isn’t clear take the path along the right hand field edge and then left on the raised path towards the road
At the road TAKE CARE crossing and go straight ahead into the enclosed footpath opposite
Follow this footpath as it turns left and right and when the wooden fence ends turn left up the trail towards trees and over the bridge over the A12
Continue straight ahead and through the gap in the trees and along the right-hand edge of the next field
5 4.2m Follow the path to the right-hand side of the garden brick wall
At the end of the path turn left and follow the short gravel drive to the tarmac drive for Prested Hall
Cross the drive and follow the path opposite with the sign for Messing on the right-hand field edge
At the field Corner take the right fork over the concrete bridge with the large boulder and follow the path around to the right staying on the right-hand field edge
Cross the second concrete bridge and then take the faint diagonal path across the field towards the wooden stile
Cross the stile and stay on the right-hand field edge following the path around to the right as it opens into a large trail through the fields up to Messing.
6 5.3m At the road turn left and head back down towards the memorial and then to the pub.
