WRC scale the heights at the Salomon Trail Half Marathon Wales
19 June 2017 - By James Kennerley
9 intrepid members of the Witham Running Club took on the Salomon Trail Half Marathon Wales on Saturday 17th, with no less than 4 members pegging top 10 positions in their respective categories.
The Salomon Trail Half Marathon Wales is widely established as one of Wales’ finest trail races taking in single tracks, forest roads, and paths in some of the most stunning forestry and heathland in the UK. With over 2000ft of climbing over the 13.1 mile distance, whist being beautiful the race could also be described as brutal! With long ascents followed by technical downhill sections all members did well to avoid any tumbles and complete the challenge.
In the blistering heat first home for WRC and hanging the rest out to dry was James Farren with a time of 1:41:00 gaining himself on a podium place in the Mens Vets 40 category with second place and 7th male overall. Closely on the tales of James was Mark Finbow in 1:43:25. Heydon Mizon was third in for WRC with a time of 1:47:19 narrowly missing out on 3rd place for the Mens Vets 40 category but a great effort to claim 4th place. James Crisp, who described the event as “the best race ever”, was next in with a time of 1:50:16. Scott Darney will be pleased to break the two hour mark in such a tough race with a time of 1:59:34 with James Blackshaw and Marc Underdown close behind with times of 2:05:43 and 2:09:37 respectively. Pegged back with injury Bill Smythe was next over the line in 2:35:27 alongside James Kennerley in his 3rd year of competing in the race with a time of 2:35:26.
