County XC Championships
8 January 2017 - By Brigid Wallen
All over the country this weekend the county XC championships are held.
You may recall we had a separate Vets Champs in November so this is the turn of men and women age 20+, Vets can also take part in this event.
Yesterday morning the Essex Senior Championships, hosted by Woodford Green, were held at Claybury Park, notoriously hilly. The men ran 12k, 3 laps with a large hill on each lap and a hill up to the finish line. It was great to watch the sprint finishes.
Congratulations and huge thanks to Leo Cole and Giles Sowerby who represented WRC and toed the line against the county whipper-snappers!
Both runners did really well and out of 186 runners, Leo was 93rd (47.31) with Giles in 111th (49.08) This was also Giles’ first taste of a county champs.
Further south, Mark Finbow was running in the Surrey champs representing South London Harriers. Assuming their distance was also 12k, Mark finished 96th out of 209 finishers in 49.29
Whizzing up to the north of the country, Helen Armitage ran in the Greater Manchester champs, representing Sale Harriers. Helen finished in a fantastic 7th place and, along with her team mates, won county gold.
Well done to everyone who took part. Definitely one for the diary for next year.

Very well done Leo and Giles and I agree with Brigid.
Running against the best in the County has so many benefits and team events help build Club spirit as is definitely evidenced in the 53-12 Cross Country League this year.
With the strongest squads since I joined the club 14 years ago it would be fantastic to get our strongest teams out for the forthcoming Road Relays.
