First John Roberts Summer 5k Race- Thursday 5th May
29 April 2016 - By James Kennerley
Another excuse for beer and food!
This coming Thursday sees the first of our summer John Roberts 5k series. Held in Kelvedon with HQ at the Angel Public House, this 4 race series (5th May, 2nd June, 23rd June, and 14th July) culminates in the prestigious 5k handicap race on the final day. This highly sought after award has been won by many of the WRC greats over the years and now is your chance to stake your claim for this year’s plaudits.
There are two trophies in both gender categories up for grabs: an award for the overall winner of the 5k series as well as winner of the final handicap race. Those new to running; the handicap system allocates a start time for all runners with the slowest starting first and the fastest starting last with the theory being everyone should cross the finish line at the same time. This levels the playing field in terms of ability and awards effort on the final race day. The first 3 races of the series are standard races, it’s the final race which is the handicap based on previous performance in the series as well as other races and other factors at the committee’s discretion.
To be eligible for the overall series winner award, you need to have raced at least three of the four races. Qualification for the final handicap race requires participation in at least one of the previous three races.
Marshals are always required, so I’d encourage those who can to run three of the races and marshal one.
This series is always well attended so it will be great to see you all down there, new faces and old. Much like the Tuesday pub runs, a lot of us stay on after the race for food and liquid refreshments at the Angel. Please put your orders in at the bar for any food before making your way to the start line. The Angel provide a lot of support to the club so it would be great to repay this with a good number staying for a beer or some food.
Those who can’t race, I’m always after marshals and time keepers so please make yourself known to me that you can help!
James K, Mens Captain.
