A cool dip in the Great East Swim at Alton Water and Harwich Triathlon

19 June 2017 - By James Montgomery

On Saturday, several members of WRC went to Alton Water, however, on this occasion not for the usual run around the 7.5 perimeter trail but, appropriately given the hot conditions, for a dip in the reservoir itself in the Great East Swim, Part of the Great Swim series of events held around the country.

There were several events on offer with distances from 750 meters, 1 mile, 2 miles, 5 kms and 10kms. Conditions were good, in total contrast to last year’s choppiness. Alex Stuckey and Wendy Martin opting for the 2-lap 2 mile event and in the 1-lap 1 mile event Liz Stuckey, Tony Wallen and John Le Seve were off in the 11:30 wave, with myself off in the earlier 11:00 wave. The girls got the better of the guys at both distances with Liz fastest finisher in the 1 mile swim and Wendy in the 2 mile swim!

In the inaugural Great East SwimRun event Stuart Mills with a friend Dan stepping in at short notice for Wendy who is unable to run through injury, took on this relatively new multi-discpline event where teams of two have to undertake a series of swims and runs over a course carrying everything they need to complete the event, this includes swimmimg in your trainers and running in a wetsuit. In this case the event distance was 11.3 kms based on 4 swims and 3 runs in and around the reservoir and in what was becoming a very hot day, competitors were looking totally exhausted crossing the line, however, Stuart and Dan were rewarded with 3rd place overall.

1 Mile Swim
Liz Stuckey 33mins 28secs
James Montgomery 36mins 59 secs
Tony Wallen 38mins 53secs
John Le Seve 40 mins 54secs

2 Mile Swim
Alex Stuckey 1hr 7mins
Wendy Martin 57mins 32secs

11.3 km Swim run
Stuart Mills/Dan   1hr 40mins 47secs (3rd overall)

On Sunday, Trevor Johnson took part in the Harwich Sprint Triathlon based at the Dovercourt Swimming pool. No race report from Trevor yet, but looking at the results it seems he did quite well, it looks like he finished 1st in his category and 16th overall.
