lorraine writes "Peter Burns has been off on his travels again - to the Galway Marathon, this time accompanied by Penny C. Here's Peter's report (photos should be on the gallery soon):
Penny Clarke and I went over to Ireland over the Bank Holiday weekend to run the Galway Marathon on Sunday. The course must have been more difficult than it looked as I failed to break 5 hours for the first time in a few outings. The run (twice round a loop) took in Galway city, the seaside resort of Salthill and its view over Galway Bay and the Claddagh (stony beach).
We were both stressed out wondering whether we were ever going to get across the Irish Sea with the baggage handlers' dispute that threatened to close the airports. Thankfully, that was all resolved and we didn't have to fall back on Plan B to take the train to Holyhead and sail over to Dublin.
There was chip timing but there was a 7 second difference between that and my watch time. I have never known there to be more than a second difference before so I'm sticking with my watch time of 5:03:14 (official result (5:03:21) Penny lost a few minutes taking in the scenery and taking pics with her I-Phone. I think she completed in 5:17 but her official time is shown as 5:18:13. "

Mersea 5 & 10 Mile Results
|
|
lorraine writes "The Sunday before the August Bank Holiday Monday is always the date for the Mersea Island 5 and 10 mile races and this year we had entrants in both races. Chris Feasey and Tracey Denby tackled the single lap 5 mile race - Chris finished in 6th place in 31:49 and Tracey (in probably her first 5 mile road race) crossed the finish line in 50:12.
We had 6 runners in the 2 lap 10 mile race. Ross Silverton was the only Witham man in the race and he led the club home in 1:20:46. Next over the line for Witham was Tracie Bromboszcz in 1:33:02, closely followed by Debbie Lewis in 1:33:07. Mersea was Lynne Williams second 10 mile race (she made her debut at Gt Baddow) and Gemma Baker was making her 10 mile debut - Lynne finished in 1:46:17, with Gemma finishing soon after in 1:47:12. Naomi Emerick is in serious training for her next marathon so the 10 miles round Mersea were quite a short run for her and she finished in 1:56:11. Well done everybody. "

RESULTS FROM THE 5K HANDICAP
|
|
mediumt writes "We probably had the best conditions for a 5k in a long time on Thursday evening as Witham Running Club's finest turned out to contest the handicap event. All runners were seeded according to their best time over the series and set off in reverse order. This can make it interesting at the finish as, if it works, all runners should cross the line together. Luckily this didn't happen as we didn't have the technology for a photo finish. First runner home was Samuel Ogunwuyi and the first lady home was Tracey Denby - both recording new personal bests. The full results are as follows: | Name | | Race Time | Start Time | Adj. As I've mentioned earlier, it is a difficult event to record finish times so apologies for any errors. Please let me know if you spot any mistakes. Thanks to Dave Smith for organising and to all the marshals and time keepers who help make this series happen. Thanks also to Sue, Vic and the staff of the Square and Compasses for making us so welcome. "

lorraine writes "Peter Burns has been off on his travels agian, back to Ireland for the aptly named Bogtrotters' Marathon! Peter still managed a sub 5 hour finish (just), completing the daunting course in 4:59:11. Here's his race report:
The race started in Strokestown Park home of the Irish Famine Museum then headed out into the Roscommon countryside, the most traffic-free route I have experienced. I saw only one tractor throughout. There were countless hills, reminiscent of Wickam Hall Lane, but much longer and slightly steeper. Much of the flat was over stoney bog tracks - just like running over cobbles but not so comfortable. It wreaked havoc with my latent back problems - (the reason I had to give up cross country!)
After the half marathoners disappeared I saw no other runners at all. The person in front of me finally finished nearly 3 minutes ahead, while the next in line was 10 minutes behind..... so, a long and lonely road. We were showered with "small" Irish rain for the first half of the course but it turned out quite sunny. Horse flies then became an added problem. After climbing a hill just before the 25 mile mark the marshal directed me round a sharp hairpin. The road of travel was hidden from view and it looked as if we were being directed through cemetery gates. I expressed surprise that we were to be running through a cemetery. The guy immediately responded that was not the case. In typical Irish fashion he commented. " No. That's for another day!"... Not too many days ahead, I thought, at that point!!! "

lorraine writes "This year the Harlow 10 was included in the Essex Championships as well as the club Summer Championship which is why we had a fairly good turnout. In all 16 runners made the trip over to Harlow to tackle the 10 mile course billed as 'a fast, gently undulating course on quiet country lanes and traffic free cycle tracks'. As the race started at 9:30 near the Mark Hall Sports Centre, most people had to make sure they got an early start and avoided any traffic hold-ups.
The hot humid conditions of the week had given way to much cooler, fresher weather which all the runners appreciated and there were four water stations to make sure everybody was well hydrated.
Kev Harper continued his run of good results, being our first runner home again - he completed the 10 miles in 1:03:10 which made him 35th out of a field of 378 finishers. Frank McKeown was the closest Witham runner to Kev with a finish time of 1:06:02. Marc Underdown is racing well and was our third man past the post in 1:11:40.
After our third man had past the post, our next finisher was club secretary Brigid Wallen who crossed the line in 1:15:18 just 7 seconds in front of Mark Williams (1:25:25).
Witham's runners now started to appear in numbers - Alex Stuckey (1:18:48) just holding off Claire Gordon (1:18:57), Rachel O'Connor (1:19:18) and Mark Lynch (1:19:54).
Colin Short (1:20:18) and Paul Hedger (1:20:56) just missed finishing in under 80 minutes and Liz Stuckey (1:21:21) wasn't too far behind Paul. Ross Silverton had a good race, finishing in 1:24:08.
David Emerick (1:35:07) was the next black and gold vest to finish, with Lynn Williams (1:47:54)not far behind in her début race at the distance. Naomi Emerick enjoyed the cooler conditions and just missed a sub 2 hour finish when she crossed under the finish banner in 2:00:59. "

lorraine writes "Naomi Emerick, Lynn Williams and daughter Amy were in action the Sunday before last at the Cancer Research Race for Life in Hyde Park. After a very early start and in much warmer conditions, Lynn completed the Race for Life in 29:05 and Naomi in 34:35. Amy Williams enjoyed her first race (although she did ache the next day) and finished in a brilliant 34:02. "

Who did What and Where (w/we 18th July)
|
|
lorraine writes "I'm still trying to find out how James & Theresa did in Germany but here's a summary of the other efforts over the weekend:
Ekiden Relay: The Ekiden Relay is a slightly different take on the marathon with teams of six runners tackling the 26.2 miles. Ipswich Jaffa hosted this year's event, held again at St Joseph's College, Ipswich. The course was a 2.5K lap of the school grounds, a mix of school field, tracks through the trees and short excursions on tarmac paths. The runners can choose how far they run - the first leg is 7.2K, followed by legs of 5K, 10K, 5K, 10K and a final 5K.
Pete Gold ran the first leg of 7.2K in 33:15 for Witham and then handed over to Lorraine for the first 5K leg. After completing her leg in 26:45, Lorraine handed over to Sue Aves for the first of the 10K legs. By this time the weather was making a real impact - it was very hot and sunny, the wind was warm and always seemed to be against the runners. Sue ran a brilliant 10K, finishing her 4 laps in 45:08.
Alex Stuckey took the middle 5K leg and had a near miss with a child as he charged down the far side of the field on his second lap - luckily both survived unscathed! Alex was Witham's fastest runner, completing his 5K in 20:28 and handing over to Tracie Bromboszcz for the second 10K. Spurred on by the encouragement of the other team members and son Nathan, Tracie finished the 10K in 54.34 and then set ladies captain Liz Stuckey off on the last leg of 5K. Liz hadn't intended to run any of the legs as she's training for the Berlin marathon in September but stepped in when other runners had to drop out - she'd run 14 miles on Saturday so she's to be congratulated on her 5K time of 23:36. Overall the team completed the 26.2 miles in 3:23:53 and were 51st out of 84 teams. As the team had a runner in the Men's Open category (Alex Stuckey), the whole team were competing against other Men's Open teams and finished 23rd out of 28 - not bad for a team where the other runners were a Male Super Vet, a Ladies Vet and three Ladies Super Vets!
BUPA Great North 10K Sunderland:
Also on Sunday, Ian and Matthew Lucas ran the BUPA Great North 10K at Sunderland. About 5000 runners tackled the route that starts at Wearmouth Bridge and ends at Sunderland's famous Stadium of Light after taking in some of the scenic coastline and Sunderland city centre. Ian and Matthew ran together and passed under the finish barrier in 53:30. "

Who did What and Where (w/e 11th July)
|
|
lorraine writes "Apologies for the late posting but there was a lot on last week!
Felsted 10K: There was a few clouds around on Sunday morning but the air was still hot and very humid which seems to be the normal conditions for Grange Farm's Felsted 10K. After a club BBQ the previous night it was good to see nine Witham runners lining up on the start line outside the primary school in Watch House Green, ready for the starter's gun - although the two men were rather outnumbered by seven ladies. The route is undulating and in the warm conditions PBs were not the order of the day. It was good to see Frank McKeown racing again and his recent absence certainly hasn't slowed him down - he was first Witham runner home in 40:52, a tremendous time considering the weather. Mark Williams and Brigid Wallen finished close together, with Mark (44:11) just reaching the finish in the school playground ahead of Brigid (44:22). However, Brigid was the third lady home in the V45 age category and picked up another county medal - this time a bronze.
Looking at the finish times, you could almost believe our runners were racing in pairs, encouraging each other round the country lanes and up the long drags. After Mark and Brigid, Rachel O'Connor and Liz Stuckey raced into sight - Rachel finished in 48:34 and Liz in 48:47.
Now the supporters were waiting for the remaining Witham ladies to appear around the corner - Nicola Steele was the next black and gold vest to appear (56:24), followed by Kerry Manning (1:04:04), Lynne Williams (1:06:20) and Naomi Emerick (1:17:52)
New Forest 10:
Sue and Kevin Aves tried to leave the heat of Essex behind at the weekend when Sue competed in the New Forest Road and Forest Track 10 Mile race starting from Brockenhurst. As the name implies the course is a mix of roads and tracks through the forest, trying to avoid any holiday makers and ponies on the way. Sue had a tremendous race, she finished in 1:14:31 and picked up the prize for 1st lady in her age category.
Asicis British 10K: John Kerr wasn't the only Witham runner in Sunday's Asics British 10K in London - James Farren was also in the crowd on the start line. Despite still having a broken collar bone, James finished in 41:21 - a bit slower than he wanted due to the sheer number of runners.
Great Bentley 5 miles:
It may have started at 7:30 in the evening but it was still hot and humid for the Great Bentley 5 mile race on Friday evening. A number of our members braved the traffic on the A12 on a summer Friday evening, luckily there were no incidents to delay them.
Despite the heat, Kev Harper had another good race and led the team home with a time of 30:13 and 17th position. Adam Hocken raced a little closer to home this time (his last race was at Stowmarket) and finished in 37:06. Wayne Hazell was Witham's third man past the finish in 37:57 - just in front of first Witham lady Rachel O'Connor (37:58) and Claire Gordon (38:01 - a new PB).
Mick Poulter (40:28) held off a fast finishing Les Leeds (40:47) and Rita Chalkley (42:37) finished just in front of Sue Mold (42:42 in only her second race since a return from injury). Amanda Martin completed the Witham contingent, crossing the line in 45:34.
Eastern Region Club Triathlon Championship: We entered three teams in the Eastern Region Club Triathlon Championship hosted by Born 2 Tri at Gosfield Lake early on Sunday morning. The event comprised a 750m lake swim, 20K bike ride and a final 5K run. Each team member had to complete the 750m swim in turn before the first team member could set out on the bike ride - and the first team member could only start the 5K run after the third person had finished the bike leg. As the weather was so warm the swim was declared 'non-wetsuit' - so no contortions needed at the end of the swim to remove the wetsuit but a bit of a shock to those accustomed to the easier swim a wetsuit provides!
The 'Stuckey in the Middle with You' team of Rosie Kelly, Alex Stuckey and Ryan Kelly did the fastest time of the three teams, finishing the event in 4:16:07. 'Hedge you Bets' - Paul Hedger, Darren Smith and Trevor Johnson (competing in his third triathlon in 3 Sundays) finished in 4:20:00 and just managed to hedge out the Rock DJ team of Dave Jobling, Tony Wallen and James Montgomery (4:21:03).
Alan Pilgrim was Witham RC's 'substitute of the day' - as Rosie Kelly had an eye infection he swam her leg for the 'Stuckey in the Middle with You' team and then ran in place of an injured Trevor Johnson in the 'Hedge your Bets' team "
