ESSEX WAY RELAY 2010
News mediumt writes "
Congratulations to all those who pulled on their club vests to take part in this year's Essex Way Relay.  At the time of writing, the final results have not been posted but the feed back through the phone lines was that everybody had put in performances to be proud of.

Two teams entered meant finding 20 willing volunteers so thanks to Tony & Claire Gordon, Mark Jeary, Brigid & Tony Wallen, Darren Smith, Kristian Fulljames, Peter & Lorraine Gold, Martyn Byford, Paul & Julie Boyden (running together), Dave Smith, Tom Duhrsen, Keith Taylor, Mark Williams, Adrian Smith, Jon Booty, Michelle Burton, Tracey Denby and Debs Lewis.

With so many runners needed it was inevitable that there would be some forced changes so special thanks to Ian Stobirski, Tracy Bromboszcz, Richard Liles and Penny Clarke for stepping in at short notice.

We were also hosting a stage so thanks to Ian Stobirski, Dave & Naomi Emerick, Lyn Williams, Phil Martin, Wendy Martin and Theresa & James Montgomery for marshalling and making sure not too many runners got lost.  Special thanks to Dave Smith for setting up the finish area after working the night shift and then running leg two.

It was great to see so many members representing their club in what is a fun and informal race.  Even better was seeing so many of the newer club members turning out, with several making their debuts in Witham colours.  Who knows, maybe next year we will rival Springfield Striders for the number of teams entered!    "

Galway Marathon
Race Results lorraine writes "
Peter Burns has been off on his travels again - to the Galway Marathon, this time accompanied by Penny C.  Here's Peter's report (photos should be on the gallery soon):

Penny Clarke and I went over to Ireland over the Bank Holiday weekend to run the Galway Marathon on Sunday.  The course must have been more difficult than it looked as I failed to break 5 hours for the first time in a few outings.  The run (twice round a loop) took in Galway city, the seaside resort of Salthill and its view over Galway Bay and the Claddagh (stony beach).

We were both stressed out wondering whether we were ever going to get across the Irish Sea with the baggage handlers' dispute that threatened to close the airports. Thankfully, that was all resolved and we didn't have to fall back on Plan B to take the train to Holyhead and sail over to Dublin.

There was chip timing but there was a 7 second difference between that and my watch time. I have never known there to be more than a second difference before so I'm sticking with my watch time of 5:03:14 (official result (5:03:21)  Penny lost a few minutes taking in the scenery and taking pics with her I-Phone. I think she completed in 5:17 but her official time is shown as 5:18:13.

Mersea 5 & 10 Mile Results
Race Results lorraine writes "
The Sunday before the August Bank Holiday Monday is always the date for the Mersea Island 5 and 10 mile races and this year we had entrants in both races.  Chris Feasey and Tracey Denby tackled the single lap 5 mile race - Chris finished in 6th place in 31:49 and Tracey (in probably her first 5 mile road race) crossed the finish line in 50:12.

We had 6 runners in the 2 lap 10 mile race.  Ross Silverton was the only Witham man in the race and he led the club home in 1:20:46.  Next over the line for Witham was Tracie Bromboszcz in 1:33:02, closely followed by Debbie Lewis in 1:33:07.  Mersea was Lynne Williams second 10 mile race (she made her debut at Gt Baddow) and Gemma Baker was making her 10 mile debut - Lynne finished in 1:46:17, with Gemma finishing soon after in 1:47:12.  Naomi Emerick is in serious training for her next marathon so the 10 miles round Mersea were quite a short run for her and she finished in 1:56:11.  Well done everybody.

What Group should I run in on a Monday Night?
Training martynb writes "Having been asked by a couple of new members over the past couple of weeks and again at the Track last night I thought I would give the matter some thought based on the current Club Standard and 5k times.

We have 5 Groups at present with the majority of runners in the 3/4 bracket. We also have enough sub 20 runners to form a Group 1 every week. If not then ' The time to move Ups' should be encouraged to do so.

These are my thoughts with what Group I would expect members to run in.

It does mean that under this model Group 5 could potentially have a spread of runners who are 6 minutes apart over 5 k (29-35 minutes) which begs the question should there be a Group 6?

5K Time Achieved               Time to move up

Group  1      - Sub 20                                       Sub 21
Group  2     - Sub 23                                        Sub 24
Group  3     - Sub 25                                        Sub  26
Group  4     - Sub  28                                       Sub  29
Group  5     - 29+

There will of course be times when members want an easier run and if this is the case then the 'informal arrangement' whereby they drop down but do not run at the front of that Group should be adopted!

Simple all sorted!!

Martyn
