About Us

General

Witham Running Club has about 180 members and is based at Bramston Sports Centre Witham. It was formed in 1983 to support those who wish to train, race and run for fun on and off road. Club Colours are Black and Old Gold.

We are a happy Club, which has grown its membership substantially in the past two years or so, with a mix of good training programmes, a great social environment, but most of all we all give respect, support, encouragement and equality to our fellow athletes regardless of how quickly or slowly they choose to run.

Our ratio of Ladies to Men is about 45:55 and we are keen to develop our club further by widening our diversity in various ways. We recognise that not everyone can attend all of our training nights, due to family, work or other commitments, but everyone is welcome.

There are loads of details below, but the best way to find out about our club is to come and give us a no commitment try. People who come to our club tend to enjoy coming back, because we are an all round great club.

Juniors

The junior section is for anyone between 8-18 years of age who would like to run, we train on Saturday mornings from 09:00-10:00.

During the winter we train at the Great Notley Discovery Centre, we specifically train for the 53-12 sponsored Cross Country Junior Events in which any club runner from the age of 8-15 can take part.

During the summer we train at Rickstones School, Witham. We use the track to develop juniors in both speed work and endurance running, focusing on fun and enjoyment.

Some of the older juniors may be invited to join the adults for Wednesday or Thursday night training. Juniors are encouraged to take part in local fun runs.

All our Coaches are CRB checked, we have male and female and a first-aid trained coach. The focus for junior training is on warm-up, technique, endurance, strength, stretching and enjoyment. We recognise that juniors play a key role in the ongoing development of our club and aim to develop all levels.

Where And When Do We Meet?

Training Nights
We meet for training runs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm for a 7:45pm start. The Monday run meets at Witham Football Club during the Winter and at different pubs around the area from May to August. The Tuesday and Thursday runs meet in Bramston Sports Centre (map here).

Most Sunday mornings at 9am, you will find a group running longer routes (to suit their needs) from Morrisons in Witham. All standards and distances are catered for from about 6 miles up, and these runs tend to be run as slow distance training runs. Mandatory (almost) is a hot drink and a doughnut or greasy breakfast from Morrisons café.

We cater for all standards and organise support for shorter or slower runs according to each runner's needs. See New Runners

Our Club nights are geared to all standards. Runners choose to run in Groups going Easy, Steady or (fairly) Hard, with each Group running back at regular intervals to give everyone maximum benefit for the training. We also have beginners groups helping brand new runners.

Summer Runs From May to August, we meet at designated country pubs for our Monday runs - see weekly updates.

Racing

We enter a number of road and cross country races and series during the year:
London Marathon - We organise a coach each year for runners and friends.
North Essex Cross Country League - 6 Sunday morning races from October to February provide great team spirit, camaraderie and are good for the soul.
Club 5k Championship and Club Road Race Championship Boxing Day 5 The Witham Boxing Day 5 has been our Club's annual race since 1983. This 5 mile race regularly attracts a field of over 400 competitors.
